If you are really talking about the terminal echo and line edition, then the rprnt entry of the terminal line settings, as can be observed with "stty -a", is what you are looking for. It is usually ^R. I just checked: $ { sleep 5; echo bar } & cat [1] 263571 I type this before the 5 seconds.bar [1] + done { sleep 5; echo bar; } ^R I type this before the 5 seconds.
