Trouble-shooting is both an art and a science. Given some undesirable issue (CD drive does not work), one approach is to start at the top (system of hardware and software), and work towards the bottom (transistors, plastic, steel, machine code, etc.); testing each level as you go. Hopefully, at some point you find one or more components with defects (to whatever degree of certainty you find acceptable). When you repair or replace the components, the system works correctly.
