If these are laptops with dual chipsets, then nouveau can sometimes lock up. You want bumblebee https://wiki.debian.org/Bumblebee and that should have the appropriate mechanics to cope or Optimus. Hope this helps - nouveau is a good and supported way forward. All the very best, as ever, Andy Cater
