for security issues about 6 months is my guess.

If you have stable in /etc/apt/sources.list you will be on sarge when i
releases as stable. You will notice when you get 600 packages to
update...
There is nothing else involved except reconfiguring packages as you get
new versions of them.
To continue to use woody after sarge releases you must substitute stable
with woody before release.
