The timing of the DPL election does not exactly come as a surprise either. Who wants to run can prepare their platform months in advance and can nominate in time.

Debian runs on E-Mail. E-Mail is a good medium for complex discussion and coordination efforts for various reasons. If you don't like that, go away.
