The package firmware-linux-nonfree – which includes the Radeon R200-family CP microcode (radeon/R200_cp.bin) – was already installed. However, I tried to install the meta-package firmware-linux (with firmware-linux-free) now without any effect. In fact I can't even start GNOME Shell without the firmware installed, by trying I would enter the fallback mode automatically. Thanks, Stefan.
