Yes, I gave up on that as well.  The way I approached it, I asked the
user base via a mass email for yea/nay opinions on implementing a spam
filter (*everyone* said yes), then later for permission to look at held
messages, then once my filters were in order (2 weeks) announced the
initiation of DELETE.  No complaints, and only three instances since of
real mail getting sandbagged (I store my Declude logs forever, set to
MID).
