You should find the hardware first before you write the software. When working on a Bar Code reader, I found that most readers these days, plug in via USB and are treated like a keyboard. Therefore, when a person used a reader, the characters were automatically read, converted and entered into the field as if they were typed in!
Hopefully, your magnetic reader/writer will have an interface that allows you to connect like a regular keyboard so you won't have to do any special routines. Good luck on your project!
