VMWare is a commercial product but VMWare Player is free though with the 
same functionality as Workstation if you are willing to put in the time 
to create VMX files by hand:

As to your last question, you would know if you are Administrator if you 
can do administrative tasks on your computer.  The answer is that you 
probably already are but don't realize it.
