Please, if this message gets through to the list will someone let me
know? I'm still not receiving copies of my own mail to this list, and I'm
going to attempt unsubscribing and then re-subscribing again but my ISP is
also experiencing a problem right now that may have some bearing on this
problem. They've promised a resolution by Tuesday, so after that we'll see!
Anyway, I had not intended to purchase D2006 this time around but a
recent theft forced me to replace Delphi and it didn't seem right to
re-purchase a lower version. So it was delivered yesterday and after
installing it and a couple components that work with it, I started giving it
a good trial run.
First of all I have to admit that Delphi's loading time has
increased significantly over D2005, and may even challenge D7 in this
capacity but I currently have no way of checking this. Let's just say it
"appears" to be faster based upon the components being loaded! I should
also note at this time that during the initial install of D2006 I did NOT
install the C++ personality. I have absolutely no interest in C++ and
figured it to be an unnecessary resource burden.
Working within the Win32 personality I found that unlike it's
predecessor, changing back and forth between the code editor and form
designer no longer takes the same amount of time as it does for me to brew a
pot of coffee, and that alone is a welcome relief. In fact in almost every
way and with every feature the IDE seems not only faster but much more
stable than it's been for the last three years. One problem reared it's
ugly head once again however, and that appears to be once again connected to
the use of "Together" support which provides the model view of one's
project. Like D2005, D2006 appears strained under the load of this
particular feature, and yet Borland has had a year to fix it! The problem
is not readily apparent when you first start working on a project. But load
a form that includes a lot of components and/or code and all of a sudden XP
reports very high page use and the editor slows to a mere crawl...so slow a
crawl that it's editor cannot possibly keep up with even MY 2 finger typing!
If you try to ignore it and continue typing in the hope that the editor will
eventually catch up and show the code you're writing, be warned that doing
so will eventually cause the IDE to lock up or just shut down!
Now in D2005 this problem although never fixed could be gotten
around by merely turning off "Together" in the options dialog, however in
D2006 this does NOT appear to be the case! I was forced to take the advice
of those who found this problem before I did on the Borland newsgroups and
actually delete it's registry loading entry! Although I didn't try it, I
suppose that simply renaming the faulty bpl would do the same, however you
would most likely get an error message on the next startup and would have to
tell Delphi not to attempt loading it anymore.
Because of having to deal with this problem I wasn't able to get
much further into D2006 and check on some of it's new features, but I
certainly will soon. But in the meantime I hope that Borland is listening
to all the complaints given on this particular problem because nothing is
worse than a feature that offers so much but doesn't work! So once again I
have to wonder what Borland is thinking about to allow this problem to
continue through two versions!
