That *is* interesting news. I had a long and pleasant relationship with CVS
for many years. The only reason I didn't suggest it earlier was because I
didn't realise there was a Windows client for it (but hey, ignorance isn't a
valid excuse, right?)

That's actually standard behaviour in SCM systems - even SourceSafe does it
(poorly).
A good idea is to make this information available via an 'about' box, or
whatever.

CVS lives on top of RCS, so there is no reason why you can't use an RCS
based system first (like www.componentsystems.com) and upgrade to CVS when
you need things like concurrent access to files (that's what the C stands
for).
