I'll pray it never happens to me ...
I've got a similar set-up - no problems as you say. Sounds like a DLL
conflict/corruption to do with Winsock. 
I don't think I have these installed, but I do have DUN1.3 - is there an
additional patch to this? I probably installed this early this year.
        Windows95 IP Driver for WinSock2 (vipup20.exe)
        Data Access Components 2.1
