You need iether ADO OR BDE/SQL Links. Take your pick - they are both
available in D5 Enterprise for royalty free use. You dont need both.
No doubt your Email will start yet another war aimed at both techniques on
the list. Fact is both work well. Just start using them. Both are fat
solutions.
With BDE you have to deploy the BDE - some think this is a nightmare, I
think its a doddle. With ADO you have to rely on the user having umpteen
M$bloat files of the correct version and monitoring your users for the
correct MS Service packs/ Upgrade calamities, and hope like hell the local
Network Nazis dont screw it all up for you with security policies.
Personally I find this particular nightmare slightly more scary than the BDE
deployment. At least the BDE stuff is reasonably safe form a game install
blowing it away, or MS changing the rules half way through.
Having chosen one or the other, its really all up to you. Just get stuck in
and use em.
Good luck

Subject: [DUG]: ADO access
I've heard conflicting things from various people about ADO and Delphi, and
if I could get a definitive answer, it would be just peachy, and may help
save my remaining hair.
I would like to connect to SQL Server 7. What do I need?
Delphi Enterpri$e edition contains SQL Links and ADO Express. I've never
used either, but do I need one or both of these to connect to SQL Server?
Does Delphi support ADO otherwise? Or, in other words, can I connect to SQL
Server from the 'professional' edition without doing heaps of work first?
I've seen the hype-packed feature lists, but what I want to see is a
'you-can't-get-there-from-here' list. And if anyone from marketing is
reading, making up new words, turning nouns into verbs, and arbitrary
creation of acronyms does not make anyone's job easier. So just stop it,
ok?
Cheers,
Terry
