You can legitimately downgrade (or upgrade) from Vista to XP at zero cost. You can phone MS and after some arguing (I know for a fact that MS NZ argued this point initially with someone I know) they will give in and provide you with a legitimate XP license key. The ability to do this is documented somewhere on their website...

It is especially pertinent with people getting machines with Vista on them and they want XP (given there is simply no reason to move to Vista whatsoever).
