I have not programmed in Delphi for several years and I miss it. My
last
upgrade was Delphi, started with Turbo Pascal and have 1,2,3,4 and 5.
The
Delphi will be for hobby programming only.
The questions are:
Should I just load Delphi 5 and go with it ?
Get the new Delphi XE, cost 899.00 plus 270 for maint. This seems
really
high to me, I get MSDN Professional and Delphi is higher ?
Are programmers still using Delphi 5.
Thanks
George
George,
I still have a few Delphi 5 programs out with users, and these still work
OK even with Windows-7. (they are there because some components I use
were removed from later Delphi versions.) For purely hobby use, I would
certainly use Delphi 5 as you already have it. You may find problems with
some 3rd-party components, which are no longer updated for a Delphi as old
as Delphi 5, and you won't be using the Unicode capabilities which are
built into all versions from Delphi 2009 onwards.
From Delphi 5, I moved to Delphi 2007, and then to Delphi 2009. Each
upgrade involved work on my part to get existing programs to compile. I
also find the upgrade price for Delphi 2011 (XE?) excessive, for the gains
which it might bring me. I accept that others may have a different view
based on their different needs. I'm waiting for the 64-bit version, and
anticipate quite a lot of work to bring my software to a working state
when pointers are no longer 32-bit unsigned integers!
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
David
