SQL Express also has a maximum memory footprint of 1GB too (from memory) as a kind of performance limit.

Its just that there are other free databases out there with no limits at all - Firebird and Postgres for example. Obviously products like Firebird aren't SQL Server (in terms of supporting products for example), but it depends on what you are looking for.
