Thanks for the review. Updated and resent the 2nd patch ('getting
started') to address the issues brought up. The current solution now
works, but is not ideal, at some point we should allocate time to
implementing a full persistent per-user site preferences solution, but
that is a large task in itself.
I'll hold off on pushing the other patches until this one has been ack'd.
