After you have studied the above links and read the general information, a
good next step would be to select one of the existing Derby bugs and
try to work on it.
For example, use the Derby issues database and the JIRA search tool
to search for
Issue & fix info: Newcomer
When I did this today there were 114 unresolved issues in this category.
See if you can find one that is interesting, and study it, and see if you
can reproduce it, and possibly suggest a potential fix.
