b) As far as I understand the test, if you start it with the parameter
'NetworkServer' it should run with network server. But I ran - so far - with
embedded.
a) I started it with no specific settings of any kind.
I don't see those backup, or compress errors, but I do see a grant error pop up
as the first thing, which I'm not sure is supposed to happen:

I had to restart the test again (the machine was rebooted) on Monday, and I do
see the XSDBB error again - after about 1 day...
