Rick Hillegas updated DERBY-5879:
---------------------------------

    Attachment: derby-5879-01-aa-multiLineToolsMessages.diff

Attaching derby-5879-01-aa-multiLineToolsMessages.diff. This patch improves the
translatability of multi-line messages produced by the Derby tools. 3 tests had
diffs and needed to be adjusted. Committed at subversion revision 1365672.

This patch makes the following changes:

1) Adds header comments to the multi-line tools messages. Hopefully, these will
be good enough to tell the translators what needs to be translated and what
doesn't.

2) Changes a couple of words from ALL CAPS to ordinary casing. By default, the
translators ignore anything which is in ALL CAPS, assuming that those words are
command keywords which don't change from locale to locale. Changing the casing
of these particular words did not seem to me to affect the reading or impact of
the messages. That is, I did not see any reason to SHOUT these particular words
at the user.

> The team which is localizing the 10.9 messages would like to audit our
> existing messages to ensure that they are easy to translate. A quick glance
> at their audit results shows many issues in the following categories:
> 1) Multi-line messages whose formatting confuses the translators. Translators
> tend to be language experts and not experts in the arcana of how Java
> properties files are formatted. I am hoping that these issues can be
> addressed by simply prefixing the multi-line messages with comments,
> explaining the arcane formatting.
> 2) Grammar, punctuation, and capitalization problems. I think we should just
> clean these up.
> I am filing this issue as a place to hold patches which address issues raised
> by the localization audit.
