hi here are some icon drafts. i started from the 256px icons from the svg on the wiki and added these square-based pictograms. these pictograms maybe don't give as much infomation as the current ones, but in my opinion they have a cleaner style and don't look so crowded. i know you decided to use a white background but there's also a trial with colored background.
