I definitely think that we want the checkable collection affordance to be user discoverable, and I'm in favor of looking outside the box for ways to do that. But as a user of this, I'm really hoping the solution we come up with isn't animated icons. Even if the frequency is low (as it appears is the case for these animated icons), I think I'd be distracted by the animations.
