As for
Kiko, I found the pop-up they had unusably big? It covered up way too
much of the calendar canvas and would definitely not be something I'd
want to keep open as I browsed other data. I'm thinking that there
should really be a smaller callout that summarizes the data in a
view-only fashion, something small enough that an user might actually
have multiple callouts open at the same time...and then a separate way
to click from the event in the calendar to a larger detail view,
perhaps by re-focusing the window on the detail view underneath the
calendar canvas.

From
my point of view the pop up is the same as the detail view, only a
substitute not meant to remain opened. So if it´s this I wouldn´t mind
the size if it´s only for new events or editing existing ones.
I agree on the smaller callouts and also the other possibilities that
arose last week of showing more info in not so a proportional way (your
e mail by the way).
I think the
main difference is that if the detail view is off to the side, you can
keep it open and do things like "take meeting notes" or review
"proposed meeting agenda" without obscuring the main calendar canvas
with a pop-up. It might also be nice to be able to see the calendar
canvas when you're setting up an invitation and scheduling a meeting.
If we have detail views that pop-up on top of the calendar canvas, it
will be difficult for the user to see the very calendar info they need
to pick a good time to meet :o)
My gut feeling
is that in general, covering up data disrupts workflow. I'd rather get
automagically "moved" to a different part of the screen than stay in
the same place but lose access to the data that's being displayed. But
of course like all things in design, it all depends on the specific
context.
:o)
I agree on the
importance of seeing the calendar canvas when you are setting up an
invitation nd or scheduling a meeting.
I don´t see the point while taking meeting notes or review meeting
agenda to see the calendar canvas (but might be my own inability.
+1 then not covering the data
+1 to Quick Add events
+1 to minimizing the quick Add Events like the Snap ticker of
Ameritrade (have you had the chance to look at it?)
