Google calendar has Cancel at the bottom of their Detail View. As
does Yahoo calendar and Hotmail calendar.
I'm pretty sure I've seen this convention in a number of places.
I think I worry about users worrying that their changes will take,
even though they haven't clicked Save...and being afraid to click
away from the item in case that kicks off an auto-save. We also want
to give user visual confirmation that their changes have been
cancelled/reverted before they click away from the item.
I'm thinking in general, we want to offer users 'the thing they
desire' which in this case is to 'cancel their changes' rather than
rely on moral equivalents that produce the same results. In other
words, if I'm thinking, ooh, I edited the wrong item, I want to
cancel my changes. It may not occur to me that if I click away, my
changes will be effectively cancelled because I haven't clicked Save.
Even if I guess that, that might happen, it feels risky because I
won't see confirmation that my changes were cancelled until AFTER, I
click away and click back. With a cancel button, the user gets to see
the changes revert BEFORE they click away from the item.

I think you're right -- a Revert or Cancel not even be necessary,
since nothing actually happens unless the user clicks Save.
And yes, it would be very easy to throw up a dialog if users click
onto another event without saving, and ask if they wanted to save
their changes to the currently selected event.

I believe they use the term 'Reset'. I've also seen 'Clear form'
on long form elements. I'm not sure if it really makes sense here
to cancel the changes you've made and reverts back to detail view
since the changes don't take affect until you've saved it. Those
buttons are also used when you have a lot of form elements or made
numerous changes to different parts of say 'settings' in a dialog
box. I would assume that if you didn't really want to make the
changes you would click away and there might be a dialog that pops
up and ask: 'Do you want to save the changes you've made?', yes/no.
