We also reproduced multiple problems of missing files in bug 218010 with gvfs ftp backend but we found that the problem is not related to the length of the filename but to the quantity of spaces in the filename. We can access file with 40-41-42-77 chars without problems, but no files with more than 6 spaces in the filename. Is that your real issue?
