Indeed it was.

Uninstall the 'compiz' package, or temporarily move the program away:

  sudo mv /usr/bin/compiz{,.prev}

does the startup work normally (fast) after this?

What is the content of your ~/.dmrc file? (In other words, which
session did you select in gdm?)
