Issuing:

xrandr --output LVDS1 --set BACKLIGHT combination

doesn't seem to do anything at all. The BACKLIGHT values are listed as
(0,8), and I can set the backlight by running

xrandr --output LVDS1 --set BACKLIGHT 5

or something, but neither of these commands stops the flickering. So
far, the only thing that stops this loop is either (a) killing gnome-
power-manager, or (b) clicking on a drop-down menu and holding the mouse
button for around 5 seconds. (this works with a context menu too, i.e.
right click, as indicated in one of the comments above)
