I have the following installed:
wine 1.2.1-0ubuntu1
ttf-mscorefonts-installer 3.2

I removed ttf-mscorefonts-installer, but still have the problem (and
still get the same result of fc-math Symbol).

fc-match --verbose Symbol|grep file gives me:
file:
"/usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-symbol-replacement/symbol-replacement.ttf/symbol.ttf"(s)

/usr/share/fonts/X11/Type1/Symbol.pfb does exist for me (symbolic link to
../../type1/mathml/Symbol.pfb. Also the ttf-symbol-replacement package has the
dependant package as wine, so I think you are on the right path madbiologist.

I set up a virtualbox fresh ubuntu image (no wine) 32bit 10.10 and had
no problems with the symbols. fc-math provides the same results as what
you get. Seems like the ttf-symbol-replacement package is the culprit.

Very good work madbiologist. Unfortunately I need wine for my
slingplayer application. Do you have any suggestions of what to do
next.

John
