That seems to be very easy to get into, though? I noticed this myself
when switching to unity, the left column of desktop icons got hidden.
They were originally layed out automatically, then I moved some of
them around a little.

Now I manually moved them all a step to the right, but of course that
requires getting rid of the launcher first; I used gconf-editor to
enable autohiding, but now it appears again on an empty desktop.
