I am using Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS with the MATE desktop and Caja as the file
manager.
I access a MyDrive cloud storage account from Softronics via WebDAV
using:
davs://mydrive.ch/webdav.php
The WebDAV connection is configured according to the provider's Linux
instructions.
The problem is reproducible and appears to depend on whether the account
password contains a German umlaut.
System information:
Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS (Noble)
MATE Caja 1.26.3
gvfs 1.54.4-0ubuntu1~24.04.2
gvfs-backends 1.54.4-0ubuntu1~24.04.2
amd64
Steps to reproduce:
Configure Caja to connect to the MyDrive WebDAV server:
davs://mydrive.ch/webdav.php
Use a MyDrive account whose password contains a German umlaut, such
as ä, ö or ü.
Enter the correct username and password when Caja asks for
authentication.
Caja repeatedly asks for the password instead of establishing the
WebDAV connection.
Change the account password to an otherwise equivalent password
without umlauts.
Try the same WebDAV connection again.
Actual result:
With the password containing an umlaut, authentication fails and Caja
repeatedly asks for the password.
With the password without an umlaut, the WebDAV connection works
immediately.
I tested this by changing the password back and forth. The problem
reappears when the password containing the umlaut is restored and
disappears again when the umlaut is removed.
Additional information:
The same MyDrive account can be accessed successfully through the
provider's web interface when the password contains the umlaut.
Therefore, the password itself is valid.
With the password without the umlaut, GVFS can also access the WebDAV
server directly. For example:
gio list davs://mydrive.ch/webdav.php/
successfully displays the remote directory contents.
I have not yet determined whether the problem is in Caja, GVFS, the
WebDAV authentication implementation, or the MyDrive WebDAV server.
However, the behaviour is consistently reproducible by changing only the
password from a version containing a German umlaut to a version without
one.
Expected behaviour:
A valid WebDAV password containing UTF-8/non-ASCII characters such as ä,
ö or ü should authenticate in the same way as an ASCII-only password.
Actual behaviour:
The correct password containing a German umlaut is rejected by the
WebDAV connection and Caja repeatedly asks for the password. Removing
the umlaut makes the same WebDAV connection work.
Please investigate the handling of non-ASCII characters in WebDAV
authentication.
