Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS currently supplies Evolution 3.56.2-9.

I originally reported a user-interface problem to the Evolution
developers at GNOME. In Evolution's main Mail pane, when attempting to
drag one top-level mail account above or below another, the interface
displays drag-and-drop feedback which makes it appear that the account
can be reordered there. In my version this includes the crossed-arrows
drag cursor and an apparent insertion indication, but releasing the
mouse does not change the account order.

The account order can in fact be changed successfully via:

Edit → Preferences → Mail Accounts

so the issue is specifically the misleading drag-and-drop feedback in
the main Mail pane.

GNOME tested the behaviour using Evolution 3.60.2 and could not
reproduce it as described. They also pointed out that Evolution 3.56 is
now an unsupported upstream branch and that GNOME developers will no
longer provide fixes for it.

However, Evolution 3.56.2-9 is the version supplied through the normal
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS repositories, rather than an old version that I have
chosen to retain.

This therefore raises two related points:

1. Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is supplying an Evolution version which is no longer
supported by the upstream GNOME developers.
2. The UI behaviour I reported may already have changed or been corrected in
newer upstream Evolution releases.

I would therefore appreciate clarification on whether Ubuntu intends to
update Evolution in Ubuntu 26.04 to a currently supported upstream
branch, or whether fixes from newer Evolution versions are expected to
be backported to the Ubuntu package.

Steps to reproduce the original UI issue:

1. Open Evolution Mail.
2. In the left-hand mail account/folder pane, click and drag one top-level mail
account above or below another.
3. Observe the drag-and-drop visual feedback.
4. Release the mouse button.

Actual result:
The account order does not change.

Expected result:
Either the account should move to the indicated position, or the interface
should not display drag-and-drop/reordering feedback for an operation which is
not supported there.

System:
Ubuntu 26.04 LTS
Evolution 3.56.2-9

GNOME upstream tested with Evolution 3.60.2 and could not reproduce the
same behaviour.
