And forgive me if I mis-remember, but isn't versioning and parallel installability a Sun ARC requirement? I seem to remember much sun-sourced kvetching circa 2002 that .gnome should really have been .gnome-1.4 and .gnome-2.0, which seemed very reasonable to me at the time.
