my long national vacation.

You can't assign some roles  to a user through the GUI, but you will get 
this function in Opensolaris 2008.11. Anyway, you can assign a role 
(root) to a user (amod) by the following CLI:
#usermod -R root amod.

you can refer usermod manpage for more information.
