I suspect that the NULL came from some garbage in the logs caused by a kernel panic. However, I upgraded to SXCE snv_71 and things are much worse. I get a popup: ------------------------------------------------------------------ There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon
Some things, such as themes, sounds,or background settings may not work correctly. The last error message was: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus) GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in. --------------------------------------------------------------------- My assumption is that my vermillion installation got in the way. So, my new question is how do I properly upgrade from the snv_71 disk so it backs out the vermillion installation completely? A fresh install would be very painful.
