Ok, I figured out how to back out the vermillion install to a point where it works, but it was a royal pain...
1) Got an installed package list (pkginfo -c GNOME2). 2) Reinstalled everything in the list. This brought me to a new error starting up the gnome-settings-daemon. This time it complained about missing symbols in libgstflac.so. I finally figured out that this was a new file in vermillion 72 that wasn't in snv_71. I removed these and the other libraries in that directory not in SUNWgnome-media and rebooted. Everything seems to work again...
