Yes, there's known failures on upgrade.   You should be able to workaround by
pkgrm'ing SUNWxwfnt, then removing any stray fonts.cache-1, fonts.dir &
fonts.alias files still in those directories, then removing the empty
directories, and then re-adding SUNWxwfnt.   Turning that into a pre-install
script or other forms of install magic to make it happen for you is a work
in progress.
