I was referring to the ones listed in the error messages as not being empty
in the message I'd replied to:
unable to remove existing directory at </usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi>
unable to remove existing directory at </usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi>
You may also need to do it for /usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/misc as well, I don't
remember for sure. (fonts.cache-1 files are safe to remove from any directory,
they're just caches, and fc-cache will rebuild when needed - they're only under
/usr if you've upgraded this system since before we upgraded to fontconfig 2.5.0
which moved the caches from the font directories to /var/cache. The fonts.dir
and fonts.aliases in these directories will be rebuilt as needed by the class
action and postinstall scripts in the font packages when you redo the pkgadd.)
