We're actually moving away from using VLC.  Sometime (possibly in 0.7, 
but more likely in the 0.8 timeframe) we'll be usign GStreamer across 
all 4 platforms (OpenSolaris, Linux, Mac, & Windows).  It's possible VLC 
will live on in as an add-on media core (like our current QuickTime & 
Windows Media Player add-ons).

It's certainly *possible* to get it to use VLC, but there are a lot of 
"Windows|Mac=VLC & *nix=GStreamer" assumptions throughout the code, so 
it would involve some porting effort.
