Occasionally my session gets into this strange mode which I have so far
found to only be solvable by logging out. I would like to see if we can
find a solution that involves less downtime and can be done from within
the session. This is on JDS release 3, GNOME version 2.6.0.

The problem is one of window focus. Normally, I can click on any part
of a window to gain the kbd focus, but in the strange mode, only
clicking the border or title bar works. This often leads to typing in
the wrong window.

Some things seem noteworthy:

1) It is only the kbd focus. I can mouse paste from other windows to
the current window, minimize other windows, etc. without clicking on the
other window's border.
2) An attempt to restart things didn't work at all. Going to Launch ->
Preferences -> ... -> Window Behavior, I tried to set the focus to mouse
over (rather than click on) and then back again. Not only did nothing
change, but during the time it was set to mouse over, that didn't work
either.
3) Executing the window properties applet from the terminal got this
error message on exit:
      (gnome-window-properties:38429): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: ???:
couldn't find weak ref fecce4d0(2adc8)

Advice and suggestions welcome.

TIA,

Glenn
