Yes, that's the one that causes the problem, the one I call the `small one'.

I don't see two at the same time.

No, the audio never appears muted.  I can mute or unmute it in
gnome-volume-control, but that makes no difference once the sound
has been stopped by moving the small slider.  All of the checkboxes
are checked.  That doesn't change.  Everything works normally except
that the sound has vanished.
