I did try the latest NVIDIA driver briefly but found out it introduced an
artifact where the lower third of my 24" display would briefly flash a whitish
bar of garbage once every few minutes or so.
The issue went away when I reverted to the driver included with 2009.06.
It also didn't allow me to bring up the second display.
I've since learned that the core dump was apparently caused by having compiz
running; without it the driver just rejects attempts to enable the second
display as was the case when the display was the Dell.
I tried your Modeline and adding "1600x1200rb" to the Screen metamodes option
for TwinView:
Option "metamodes" "DFP-0: nvidia-auto-select +0+0, DFP-1:
1600x1200rb +1920+0"
but never could get Twinview to enable the second monitor, so I suspect the
only way to use the second monitor would be to pull out the NVS 290 and install
my old Quadro FX 1400 card. :(
