I finally dug up a DOS 6.22 floppy (!) and was able to run the upgrade.

End result - either my Sun X7200A or 20" Dell are driven properly in 1600x1200 
mode, and I haven't seen any crashes with compiz enabled.

So the NVIDIA firmware flash IS the fix for 9486 as far as I'm concerned.
