Flip4Mac for example is a working implementation probably based on wmv specifications, which Microsoft gladly gave up for a little cash, since their format is more important than money if you can spin it right. Sun definitely needs to talk to Microsoft about this, since at the moment RealPlayer is one of the few applications that is decent which can play mp3 and other patented codecs, as there's still gstreamer (re)licensing gunk plugging progress. Oh the joys of the GPL... but I don't go any farther with that, except to say I'm suprised it took this long to get authors to allow an exception, I'd dump those bits that can't get an exception.
