I figured out the problem the other day: in my .Xdefaults I have a line that says "*background: black" so that I can get a black background in my dtterms. This also affects VirtualBox (and was the cause of my problems), but the workaround is (thankfully) simple: I start VirtualBox with "-bg white" and all is well! It'd be nice to be able to figure out what incantation needs to go into my .Xdefaults to make this automatic, but it's not super high priority. I plan to play with XP Pro inside VirtualBox this weekend.
