I guess if a Motif look and feel was felt necesary,
wouldn't mwm (Motif Window Manager) be suitable?

I presume that even if CDE goes that the Motif libs will
be around for a few years for 3rd party app binary compatability.
mwm would only be a few megs of disc space if the libs were
already there.

It would be graphically familiar to anyone used to CDE too.
And note the 3meg memory usage :)

Or you could always ask your good friends at SGI for a 
copy of 4dwm :) another Motif window manager.
