Big +1 from me. And in case this helps, a while back (6 months or so) I sort
of prototyped almost exactly what you describe and documented it here:

I haven't done much with it since then though, mostly because I want/need
to use JDS day-to-day.
Also some key things have changed in this arena since I did this -- e.g.
the emergence of some important new package-dependency management
technologies...
