GNOME certainly has bigger memory foot print than CDE. GUI in CDE is 
motif based and GNOME is GTK+, the later is significantly more features 
rich.
Of course GNOME is also have other layers of libraries that make it 
requires more memory resources and so is CPU resources. There are many 
more applications in GNOME than CDE too that can contribute to the 
resource usage.

In the ITOPS environment within Sun, GNOME (a.k.a JDS) is the desktop 
for all. One can't really get CDE anymore. I think the sizing of system 
can't be the same for CDE as in GNOME. The question is can the 
difference be made minimum.
