My guess is that rhythmbox doesn't buffer (enough)
data in the sound card driver.  It seems to send
tiny amounts of data (1764 bytes; 10 milliseconds of
data at 44.1kHz stereo 16-bit) and waits until the 
data buffer becomes empty (or the amount of data
is lower than some tiny threshold).

Btw. when I use a command line tool (e.g. ogg123) there
is no such issue with audio under load.
