I had no problems building the latest vte from source. I built it for
the XFCE Terminal, though. For gnome-terminal you would need
to rebuild gnome-terminal from source as well, I think, which may
start to get a little complex. It would probably be easy enough on
OpenSolaris, as the rest of the prerequisites are likely to be
present and up to date.
