What Sun keys don't work for you? I've been using a Sun keyboard with all
releases of OpenSolaris. The problem is that most keys aren't mapped by
default, so you have to "fix" this in the keyboard shortcuts dialog. All of
the Sun keys are recognized there. I used them to edit this message. All of
my coworkers also have Sun keyboards they use with OpenSolaris. The volume and
mute keys even work--in fact, there is no key on my Sun keyboard that I've not
been able to map to a standard or custom behavior.

The man issue was correctly answered in other posts: it's a behavior of "less"
that I also dislike, so:

PAGER=/usr/bin/less -insFX
or PAGER=/usr/bin/less -nsFX
